Solar Panel Maintenance

One of the best things about solar panels: they have no moving parts. Maintenance is minimal — but not zero.

Regular Maintenance

Cleaning (1–2x per year)

Rain handles most dirt, but panels accumulate:

• Pollen (spring)
• Dust and grime (dry summers)
• Bird droppings (all year)
• Fallen leaves (autumn)

Clean with water and a soft brush or squeegee. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals. Early morning is best — panels are cool and dew softens dirt.

A dirty panel can lose 5–15% of its output. In dusty or pollen-heavy areas, cleaning twice a year makes a noticeable difference.

Visual inspection (1x per year)

Walk around your system and look for:

• Cracked or discolored panels
• Loose mounting brackets or rails
• Damaged cables or connectors
• Water pooling (on flat roofs)
• Vegetation growing near or under panels

Monitoring check (weekly)

Glance at your monitoring app to confirm the system is producing expected output. Most issues announce themselves through a sudden drop in production.

Professional Maintenance

Annual inverter check — your installer may offer annual maintenance packages that include inverter inspection, connection tightening, and performance analysis. Cost: €100–€200/year.

Inverter replacement — inverters last 10–15 years, so expect one replacement during your panels' lifetime. Budget €800–€2,000.

Panel replacement — extremely rare. Modern panels are warranted for 25 years at 80%+ output. Manufacturing defects usually appear in the first 2–3 years.

What NOT to Do

• Don't walk on panels — they can crack
• Don't use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads
• Don't pressure wash at close range
• Don't attempt electrical work yourself — call your installer
• Don't ignore monitoring alerts — small problems become expensive problems
