Modern solar systems come with monitoring that shows exactly how much energy you're producing, consuming, and exporting — in real time.
What Monitoring Shows You
Most monitoring apps display:
- Current production — watts being generated right now
- Daily/monthly/yearly totals — kWh produced over time
- Consumption — how much your home is using (if a consumption meter is installed)
- Self-consumption ratio — what percentage of solar you use vs. export
- Revenue/savings — estimated money saved based on your tariff
- System health — alerts for underperformance or faults
Types of Monitoring
Inverter-level monitoring — comes free with most modern inverters. Shows total system output. Apps include Fronius Solar.web, SMA Sunny Portal, Huawei FusionSolar.
Panel-level monitoring — available with microinverters (Enphase) or optimizers (SolarEdge). Shows each panel's individual output. Useful for detecting a single underperforming panel.
Third-party monitoring — independent systems like Solar Analytics or Sense that add consumption monitoring and more advanced diagnostics.
What to Watch For
Sudden drops in production — could indicate an inverter fault, tripped breaker, or panel damage.
Gradual decline — panels degrade 0.3–0.5% per year. A faster decline may indicate soiling (dirt, pollen) or developing shade from tree growth.
Mismatched panels — with panel-level monitoring, one panel consistently underperforming may have a wiring issue, more shading, or a defect.
Zero production — if your system shows zero watts during a sunny day, something is wrong. Check your breaker first, then contact your installer.
Tips
- Check weekly — glance at your app once a week to catch issues early
- Compare months year-over-year — production varies by season, so compare January 2026 to January 2027, not to July 2026
- Clean your panels annually — rain handles most dirt, but pollen, bird droppings, and dust in dry climates need occasional cleaning
- Keep your inverter firmware updated — manufacturers push updates that improve performance and fix bugs
A well-monitored system catches problems in days rather than months — the difference between a minor fix and significant lost production.
