Solar Panels and Heat Pumps
A heat pump moves heat from outside air (or ground) into your home. Powered by solar electricity, it's the most efficient way to heat a home — 3 to 5 times more efficient than direct electric heating.
How Heat Pumps Work
Heat pumps don't generate heat — they move it. Even cold outside air contains thermal energy. A heat pump extracts it and concentrates it to warm your home.
For every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, a heat pump delivers 3–5 kWh of heat. This ratio is called the COP (Coefficient of Performance).
Air-source heat pumps (most common for residential): Extract heat from outside air. Work efficiently down to -15°C. Cost: €5,000–€12,000 installed.
Ground-source heat pumps: Extract heat from underground (constant ~10°C year-round). Higher efficiency but much higher installation cost. Cost: €12,000–€25,000 installed.
Why Solar + Heat Pump Is Powerful
An average home in a temperate climate uses 10,000–15,000 kWh of energy for heating per year (gas/oil/electric).
A heat pump with COP 3.5 needs only 3,000–4,300 kWh of electricity to deliver the same heat. A 3–4 kWp solar addition covers most of this.
Combined savings: eliminating gas/wood heating costs AND electricity costs for the heat pump. Total annual savings can exceed €1,500–€2,500.
Seasonal Mismatch
The challenge: you need the most heating in winter, when solar production is lowest.
Solutions:
- Size the solar system generously — winter production from a larger system still covers significant heat pump consumption
- Net metering — summer solar surplus creates credits that offset winter grid imports
- Hot water tank as thermal storage — run the heat pump harder during sunny hours, store heat in a large insulated water tank
- Hybrid systems — a heat pump handles most heating, with a gas boiler for the coldest days only
Heat Pump for Cooling Too
In summer, most heat pumps reverse to provide air conditioning — using your peak solar production when you need cooling most. This is where solar + heat pump alignment is best.
Is It Worth Combining?
If you're already planning solar, adding a heat pump (or vice versa) makes the economics of both significantly better. The combined system reduces your total energy costs by 60–80%.
