Ancient Origins

Long before photovoltaic cells, ancient civilizations understood the Sun's power. Greeks and Romans oriented their buildings to maximize sunlight and warmth during winter — a concept now known as passive solar architecture. The Romans even passed laws protecting a citizen's right to sunlight.

The 19th Century: Discovery

The story of modern solar energy begins in 1839, when French physicist Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect. While experimenting with an electrolytic cell, he noticed that voltage increased when exposed to sunlight — the first recorded conversion of solar energy to electricity.

In 1873, Willoughby Smith discovered that selenium's conductivity increases with light exposure. By 1883, Charles Fritts built the first solar cell from selenium — though at less than 1% efficiency, it was more curiosity than power source.

1954: The Silicon Breakthrough

The real breakthrough came at Bell Laboratories in 1954, where researchers developed the first practical silicon solar cell with 6% efficiency. Many consider this the most important event in solar energy history — silicon remains the foundation of today's panels.

The Space Age

Solar cells found their first practical application in the space race. The American satellite Vanguard I (1958) used solar cells for power, proving the technology worked in real-world conditions. For decades, space remained solar's primary market — too expensive for Earth, but perfect for satellites.

The 1970s Oil Crisis

The oil crisis of the 1970s sparked serious interest in solar as an alternative energy source. Governments began funding research, and the push to reduce manufacturing costs began. Panel prices started their long decline.

2000s–Present: The Exponential Era

Solar panel costs have fallen 90% since 2010. What was once a niche technology is now the cheapest source of new electricity in most of the world. Key milestones:

  • 2010: Solar electricity cost ~$0.36/kWh
  • 2015: Cost dropped below $0.10/kWh in sunny regions
  • 2020: Solar became the cheapest source of electricity in history
  • 2024: Global installed solar capacity exceeded 2,000 GW
  • 2025: Over 190 countries have significant solar installations

What's Next?

Panel efficiency continues to improve (lab records now exceed 47% for multi-junction cells). Perovskite solar cells promise even cheaper manufacturing. And as battery storage costs fall, solar + storage is replacing not just coal, but natural gas plants too.
